China is the most important external partner for Indonesia, well ahead of the next-most influential powers, Singapore and the United States. While the United States is the most important defence partner for Indonesia, China is the leading economic influence. Neighbouring countries Malaysia and Singapore lead in terms of cultural and diplomatic influence respectively. Apart from Timor-Leste, where it is the leading external power, Indonesia is most influential among its closer Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) neighbours Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. Despite its size and leading role in ASEAN, Indonesia is not among the top partners for countries in mainland Southeast Asia.
