China is the most important external partner for Cambodia by a large margin. Traditional partner Vietnam ranks second, slightly ahead of Thailand and the United States. While China is the leading partner in terms of diplomacy and economic relationships, Thailand and Vietnam are the most important sources of cultural influence, a result of migration and people exchanges in the Mekong sub-region. A small country, Cambodia ranks in the top ten partners for Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam but does not project significant influence elsewhere.
